England Ireland Scotland and Wales were each presented with a pair of spoons by the Australian Ladies Golf Association in 1966. The spoons to be awarded as trophies to the winners of Annual Competitions organised to raise money for the International Match Fund. Each Country to decide its own method of play.
In England the Australian Spoons competition fell in abeyance in 1971 after the method of raising funds was reorganised to include administration and match expenses.
The competition was revived in England in 1981 as Medal Foursomes for Bronze Division Players one couple from each Division of ELGA qualifying to play in the final held on practise day of the County Finals .
In 1983 Divisional Finals were introduced to generate greater interest in the competition and in 1986 the format of the competitions changed to Stableford Foursomes and this remains the current method of play.
In Scotland the competition is known as the Commonwealth Spoons and takes the form of Medal Foursomes at County level the top qualifiers form each County playing in the final.
In Wales the competition has been run continuously since its inception in 1967.Unfortunately not information is to hand concerning the Spoons competition in Ireland.
The above was written in January 1994
The entry fees now support Regional Competitions and the winner of each Regional Spoons Competition qualifies to compete in a National Competition at Woodhall Spa in August each year
